Johns Hopkins' Alex Bond & Chris Hutchens Named Nov. 10 Southern Division Co-Players of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins University's Chris Hutchens (Sr., Granite Bay, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) and Alex Bond (Sr., North Wales, Pa./Germantown Academy) helped lead the Blue Jays to a third place finish at the Southern Division Championship at Princeton University over the weekend to earn November 10 Southern Division Co-Player of the Week honors.
Hopkins, which earned the No. 3 South seed and one of four seeds out of the division for the 2008 Eastern Championship on November 21-23 at the United States Naval Academy, clinched its third straight top-three finish at Southerns courtesy the play of Bond and Hutchens.
Bond scored one goal and notched three assists with four kicks out draw in an 11-7 opening round win over Mercyhurst College. Besides his offense, Bond's most notable contribution came on defense as he held Peter Schonhoff, the 11th leading scorer in the nation, scoreless in the contest.
In the next round, he added two assists with two kicks out drawn in a 16-6 loss to the No. 14-nationally ranked Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy, before helping Hopkins end a 12-match losing streak to No. 20-ranked Bucknell University with a goal and three assists in an 11-9 victory in the third place game.
Against the Bison, he held Richie Hyden, the third best scorer in the nation, to just two goals as the Blue Jays clinched the No. 3 South seed for the Eastern Championship and will face No. 17 Brown University at 12:30 p.m. at Navy on November 21.
The Blue Jays' goalie, Hutchens made 30 saves in 96 minutes of work over the weekend to anchor the Hopkins' defense.
Against Bucknell in the third place game he posted 12 saves with one assist and two steals following nine saves versus Navy and nine saves with a steal against Mercyhurst.
