Iona's Nick Velasquez Named Nov. 10 Northern Division Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Iona College's Nick Velasquez (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) tallied three goals with an assist and eight steals in a 2-1 week to earn the November 10 Northern Division Player of the Week award as the Gaels downed Fordham University (8-7 W), fell to St. Francis College (17-6 L) and defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology (12-11 W) to place third at the Northern Division Championship.

The team leader in field blocks (28), against Fordham in the opening round Velasquez recorded two goals with five steals and a field block as the Gaels survived 8-7.  Following a loss to St. Francis, he added a goal, an assist, three steals and two field blocks in the Northern Division third place game against MIT as Iona held off the Engineers 12-11 to clinch the Northern Division No. 3 seed for the 2008 Eastern Championship on November 21-23 at the United States Naval Academy.
