Washington & Jefferson's Jessica Barby Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has announced the selection of Washington & Jefferson College junior Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II College Division At-Large First Team.

One of 22 athletes named to the team, Barby and the other nine first-team members will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The All-America teams are scheduled to be released Wednesday, June 10.

The 2009 Academic All-District II at-large teams were selected by members of CoSIDA. The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The Presidents' second-leading scorer this season with 31 goals and 36 assists for 67 points, Barby was also third on the squad with 14 steals. 

A child development and education major, she helped the Presidents win a school-record 11 games in 2009.  W&J earned its sixth invitation to the Collegiate III National Championships in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and the Presidents placed sixth.  Washington & Jefferson also placed fifth at the CWPA Championships.  As a sophomore, Barby collected 19 goals and nine assists. 

To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Sports eligible under the at-large program include: women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's wrestling.
