Western Division to Open Play this Weekend at Michigan
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- For the
University of Michigan, Indiana University, Grove City College,
Washington & Jefferson College, Penn State University-Behrend
and newcomer Chatham College, the season begins in full force this
weekend as six of the Collegiate Water Polo Association's eight
teams come to Ann Arbor, Michigan with one thing on their minds:
just win.
This weekend, Michigan, the defending Western Division Division
and Eastern champion, begins defense of its crowns as the
Wolverines will host Indiana, Grove City, PSU-Behrend, Chatham and
W&J in the first Western Division action of the year.
The seven-time division champion
Wolverines, who are hosting the division games for the first time
since 2003 when U-M was in the Southern Division, and for just the
second time in program history, will face another difficult
challenge this year as Indiana will once again be a contender for
the division championship.
Although Michigan and Indiana will not meet this weekend, that
showdown does not come until March 28 at Indiana, both teams will
face challenges from the league's up and coming teams.
Both the Wolverines and Hoosiers will clash with Grove City,
Washington & Jefferson, Chatham and Penn State-Behrend over the
weekend to account for eight of the nine games, while Grove City
and Penn State-Behrend will also meet head-to-head.
The highlight of the weekend for the league is the debut of
Chatham College, which will play its first games as a varsity team
after joining the league on November 1, 2007. Led by head coach
Mike Meyers, the Cougars will not face an easy challenge in their
first two games as a varsity program taking on Indiana and Michigan
over the weekend.
A complete schedule of games for the division is available on the
CWPA
website, while Michigan will supply boxscores
after each game for fans interested in tracking the progress of
each team over the weekend.
