Bucknell Stops George Washington 11-6 in Southern Division Action
WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) is
third on Bucknell’s all-time goals list, but she did not need
to score a goal Thursday night to help the Bison women’s
water polo team to an 11-6 win at George Washington. The senior
captain recorded a career-high eight steals and dished out a career
high-tying five assists to help Bucknell to the victory and snap a
three-game losing streak.
Rowe’s eight steals were the most by a Bison since Taylor
Voeltz had eight against Pomona-Pitzer in 2004. As a team, Bucknell
(7-8, 1-1 CWPA) posted a season-high 20 steals against the
Colonials, who lost for the third straight time and fell to 2-8 on
the season.
Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius
Prep), who recently had a career-high five goals against
Wagner, led Bucknell with four goals, while Amanda
Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added
three goals and two assists. Canonica’s 31 goals this year
are second on the team to Valentina Rozas’ (Pico
Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) 32. Rozas netted two goals and
one assist Thursday to reach the 200-point plateau for her
career.
After playing even with George Washington through the first
period, Bucknell outscored the Colonials in each of the final three
quarters. The Bison exploded for five goals in the fourth quarter
as they won for the 33rd straight time when scoring at least 10
goals.
The Bison, who have won 17 straight against George Washington,
earned just four six-on-five chances in the game. They did have
assists on each of their 11 goals.
Rowe, who was held without a goal for just the third time this
season, extended her own school record and now has 211 steals in
her career.
Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor)
and Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos)
split time in goal for Bucknell and combined for seven saves.
Thursday’s league contest kicked off an 11-game, 10-day road
trip for the Bison, who will fly to California on Friday. Bucknell
will play at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational this weekend,
opening up against No. 19 UC San Diego.
