Princeton to Host Iona, Bucknell & George Washington on March 27-28

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Princeton women’s water polo team hosts three games this weekend beginning on Friday night. The weekend will be highlighted by an 11 a.m. game on Saturday morning against Bucknell that will be televised live nationwide on ESPNU.

Princeton returns to DeNunzio Pool after playing 11 straight games on the road. The Tigers are currently 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the CWPA Southern Division. Princeton recently returned from an eight-game Spring Break California trip. The Tigers went 1-3 at the LMU Invitational with a win over Colorado State, then went 3-1 during the week with wins over Concordia, Whittier and Chapman.

Junior Phoebe Champion who leads the team with 32 goals this season has led the Tigers offensively. The junior also has nine assists and 17 steal and has drawn a team-high 25 ejections. She also has won 34 of 45 sprints, a winning percentage of more than 75%.

Five other Tigers have reached double figures in goals this season. Junior Helen Meigs ranks second on the team with 26 goals and has a team-high 35 assists this season. Sophomore Lauren Brunner, the reigning Southern Rookie of the Year, ranks third with 25 goals. Senior Claire Jacobson, sophomore Tanya Wilcox and junior Carolina Ardila all have goal totals in the teens. Jacobson leads the Tigers in steals with 21. Both Tiger goalies continue to split the time in goal. Sophomore Christina Michel is 7-3 with a 54.7 save percentage, while freshman Kristen Ward is 5-4 with a 61.7 save percentage.

Princeton will play three times this weekend, beginning with a Friday night non-conference game against Iona. Princeton will then play twice on Saturday, hosting Bucknell at 11 a.m. and George Washington at 4:30 p.m.

Princeton doubled Iona 12-6 last year when the team’s last met. The Tigers went 3-1 against Bucknell last season with all four games decided by a goal. Bucknell won the first game 6-5 at home, before Princeton edged the Bison 7-6 at home. Princeton then defeated Bucknell 10-9 in overtime in the Southern Championship game, and also edged the Bison 7-6 a week later in the first round of Southerns. Princeton won at George Washington 12-4 earlier this season.

At 1-1 in Southern play, the Tigers are even in the standings with Bucknell, tied for second. Maryland is first at 3-0 with George Washington at the bottom at 0-3.

Saturday morning’s game will air live on ESPNU. It will be the first water polo game ever aired by the network. Eamon McAnaney and former U.S. National Team goalie Chris Dorst will call the action live. The game is expected to be replayed Sunday, March 29, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
