Leader of the Pack: Hartwick Handles Harvard & Brown to Remain First in Northern Division
ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick women's water polo team ran its unbeaten streak to 14 games on Saturday with a pair of victories over Ivy League opponents at Moyer Pool as the Hawks downed Harvard 16-10 in their first match and came from behind to down Brown 13-10.
In the victory over the Bears, Kirsten Hudson (Wellington, New Zealand) scored seven goals to become 'Wick's all-time leading goal scorer with 275 career markers.
Against the Crimson, Hartwick took
control early out-scoring their opponents by a 6-2 margin in the
first period and led 10-6 at the half. After both teams scored a
goal apiece in the third, the Hawks netted five goals to Harvard's
three for the final 16-10 score line. Hudson scored six times and
added an assist. Senior Barbara Amaro (Sao Paolo,
Brazil) added a hat-trick and Stefani Toungate
(League City, Texas), Christina Evans (Cedar
Hills, Utah), and Jessica McKee (Tustin,
Calif.) each scored two goals. Mckee also handed out a
game-high five assists. Goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand)
stopped 13 Crimson shots and contributed two assists.
Hartwick took an early 3-0 lead on the Bears in their second match.
Hudson netted two of the game's first three goals with her second
being the record-clinching tally. Both teams would then alternate
goals for much of the quarter until Lauren Presant scored for Brown
with 2:06 left and again with 49 ticks remaining to make it a 6-5
deficit. Presant finished the period with four of the Bears' five
strikes.
The Bears would edge the Hawks 3-2 the second period with Presant
tallying all three goals for an 8-8 deadlock at the half. In the
third, Brown scored two more goals to take the lead 10-8 and goalie
Stephanie Laing continually frustrated the Hartwick offense making
timely stops throughout the stanza. Hudson finally pulled the Hawks
to within one with 3:40 left in the period, and she evened the
score 1:24 later to send the game into the final period all tied at
10-10.
In the fourth, Evans got the game-winner with 6:53 left on the
clock. Hudson would net her sixth of the game 42 seconds later to
give the Hawks some breathing room, and she finished off the
scoring on a breakaway courtesy of a Dorman pass with under two
minutes to go. Meanwhile on the defensive end, Dorman and the Hawks
closed down any Bears' chances, shutting them out in the
quarter.
The Hawks, who are tied for 13th in the latest CWPA national poll,
are now 15-6 overall.
