Five CWPA Student-Athletes Named to 2009 ACWPC Division III All-America Team
2009 Women's All-America Teams
DENVER, Colo. -- The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches released its Division I, II & III All-America teams on Wednesday, June 17 with five Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Student-Athletes earning honorable mention accolades on the Division III team.
Washington & Jefferson goalie Polly Ziegler (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and utility player Alicia Sutton (Sr., Erie, Pa./McDowell), Grove City College drivers Kate Stiebler (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Liza McRuer (Sr., Irvine, Calif./University) and Connecticut College utility player Emma Heishman (Sr., Boiling Springs, Pa./Hill School) were honored with recognition.
A 2008 and 2009 Collegiate Water
Polo Association Women’s All-Western Division second team
selection, Sutton capped her career as the Presidents’
all-time leading scorer with 193 goals, 127 assists and 320 total
points. She also added 112 career steals. In 2009, Sutton,
who was also named to the Collegiate III National Championship
All-Tournament Team, fired in 62 goals and added 37 assists for 99
points. Her 62 goals set the Presidents’ single-season
record previously held by Audrey Taylor. She also finished with 30
steals for the second-straight season.
During her career, Washington & Jefferson recorded 34
victories and made two Division III Collegiate Championship
appearances.
Ziegler spearheaded the Presidents’ defense with a
career-best 264 saves (10.6 saves per match) this year to earn
All-Western Division second team honors. She racked up a
season-high 18 saves in the Presidents’ fifth-place match
victory (7-6 W) at the CWPA Western Division Championship versus
Grove City College, and notched 16-save performances against
Mercyhurst College (18-8 L) and Wheaton (Ill.) (9-8 W).
W&J's starting goaltender in each of the past two seasons, she
will enter her senior season in 2010 with 495 career saves.
A two-time All-Western Division selection, Stiebler picks up her second All-America award as she was recognized with second team honors in 2008.
A 2009 All-West second team selection, she tallied 53 goals, 31 assists, 64 steals and 24 ejections drawn to earn All-Division first team honors last year following a 25 goal, 15 assist, 44 steal, 14 ejection drawn freshman season in 2007.
McRuer garners her first All-America nod after entering the season with 94 goals, 63 assists, 247 steals and 52 ejections drawn.
Heishman, who earned All-Northern Division first team honors this year, recorded 28 goals in 11 games to wrap up her career while serving as a co-captain for the Connecticut Camels this year.
The AWPC selects first, second and third teams for its Division I All-America awards. For voting, players receive three points for a first team nomination, two points for a second team nomination, and one point for a third team nomination. A player may earn honorable mention if she receives votes from two schools, excluding her own.
Overall, the Collegiate Water Polo Association received 15 All-America selections in Divisions I, II and III, including 10 selections in Division I.
