Mercyhurst's Rachel Griepsma Named to 2009 ACWPC Division II All-America Team

2009 Women's All-America Teams

DENVER, Colo. -- The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches released its Division I, II & III All-America teams on Wednesday, June 17 with Mercyhurst College driver Rachel Griepsma  (So., Lindsay, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) earning recognition on the Division II team.

Griepsma becomes the second player under the direction of head coach Curtis Robinette to earn All-America honors after Christine Somera '07 earned the distinction in 2005.

She led the Lakers with 48 goals and 54 points through 19 games this past season as she averaged 2.52 goals per game to set the second-highest mark in program history, falling just under a point shy of her record-setting mark of 3.47 set during the 2008 campaign.

A two-time CWPA All-Western Division first team selection (2008-09), she was named the 2008 Western Division Rookie of the Year while establishing the Lakers' frosh record for goals in a season with 80 while ranking among the national leaders in goals per game (3.9 gpg).  Ranked second on the team in points (96) and drawn ejections (33), her freshman goal total was the second-best single season total in school history.

Through two seasons of play, Griepsma ranks fourth all-time in goals (128) and fifth all-time in points (150) in the Mercyhurst record books.

The AWPC selects first, second and third teams for its Division I All-America awards. For voting, players receive three points for a first team nomination, two points for a second team nomination, and one point for a third team nomination. A player may earn honorable mention if she receives votes from two schools, excluding her own.

Her selection was one of 15 selections for the Collegiate Water Polo Association in Divisions I, II, III, including 10 selections in Division I.
