Cal Poly Remains No. 1 in January 28 Women's National Collegiate Club Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Defending national champion California Polytechnic State University held off 2008 national runner-up the University of Oregon by a single point as the Mustangs remain No. 1 in the January 28 Women's National Collegiate Club Poll.

Cal Poly, which captured the 2008 Championship with a 7-6 overtime victory against Oregon, was a unanimous No. 1 selection in the preseason poll two weeks ago.  Oregon, which rolled to a 4-0 weekend in the Northwest Division with wins over the University of Washington "A" (16-0 W), University of Oregon "B" (13-1 W), Western Oregon University (9-0 W) and Western Washington University (18-4 W), moved within striking distance of taking over the No. 1 spot in the coming weeks.

Overall, the top four places in the poll remain unchanged with the University of California-Davis and the University of California-Los Angeles holding down their preseason ranks of No. 3 and 4, respectively.

The top four were the only positions in the poll to remain unchanged as the pollsters moved Michigan State University up to No. 5, placed the University of Notre Dame at No. 6, tied the University of Florida and the University of Pennsylvania at No. 7, dropped the University of Michigan at No. 9 and rounded out the Top 10 with the University of Arizona.

Grand Valley State University, the University of Illinois, Boston College, Middlebury College, California State University-Chico, Duke University, New York University, the University of California-San Diego, Texas A&M University and Florida State University account for the final 10 in the Top 20 poll as only one division opened play last week.
