Texas Division To Start Race to Division Championship this Weekend at Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas Division championship race starts this weekend as defending champion and No. 20-nationally ranked Texas A&M University will host Baylor University, Texas Tech University, Texas State University, Rice University, University of Texas and Trinity University on February 21-22 in the first of two regular season tournaments.
A&M will need to overcome perennial contenders Rice and Texas if the Aggies hope to join Rice as the only teams to repeat as division champion in consecutive years.
In the history of the division, only Rice has repeated as champions as the Owls captured the 2003-06 titles. A&M and Texas have dominated the other years of the championship with the Aggies taking the 2001 and 2008 crowns, while the Longhorns captured the 2002 and 2007 titles.
Overall, only five teams have reached the division title game as A&M (2001-03, 2006-08), Texas (2001-02, 2007-08), Rice (2003-06), Baylor (2005) and Trinity (2004) have captured or fallen one game short of taking the division title.
