Still No. 1: USC, Pomona-Pitzer & Michigan Retain No. 1 Rankings in February 11 Varsity Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and University of Michigan remain a top the women's water polo varsity standings this week as the Trojans, Sagehens and Wolverines are unanimous No. 1 selections in the Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 polls released by the CWPA league office for the week ending February 8.

USC continued its dominance in the varsity ranks last week knocking off Stanford University (12-10 W OT), University of Hawaii (11-3 W), Arizona State University (19-9 W), Hartwick College (18-4 W) and University of Indiana (13-5 W) by an average score of 15-6.  The Trojans, who have been ranked No. 1 since the preseason, are followed in the poll by Stanford University.  The Cardinal, who have been ranked No. 2 since the preseason, downed Arizona State (15-14 W), Indiana (11-2 W), Hawaii (8-6 W) and UCLA (10-5 W) last week to hold onto the runner-up position for another week.

Hawaii, ranked No. 4 since the preseason, made the biggest move of the week climbing to No. 3 on the heels of wins over San Jose State University (12-7 W) and UCLA (13-12 W).  The win was historic as it drops the Bruins of UCLA back to No. 4 in this week's poll for the program's lowest ranking since the 1999 season.

San Diego State University claimed sole possession of No. 5 in the poll following wins over Hartwick (15-12 W), Marist College (12-3 W), University of Maryland (14-6 W), University of California-Irvine (10-8 W), University of Michigan (9-6 W) and University fo California-Davis (12-8 W). 

The Golden Bears of the University of California, which were tied with SDSU at No. 5 last week, slipped back to No. 6 as the squad handled Fresno Pacific University (23-4 W, 22-8 W), Colorado State University (20-9 W, 15-7 W) and University of California-Santa Cruz (18-3 W) during the stretch of February 2-8.

UC-Davis and San Jose State move up from No. 9 and 10, respectively, to tie for seventh, while Loyola Marymount University and Arizona State moved to No. 9 and 10 to round out the "Top 10".

University of Michigan, UC-Irvine, California State University-Northridge, Long Beach State University, Hartwick, University of California-San Diego, California State University-Bakersfield, Indiana, Princeton University and University of California-Santa Barbara round out the Top 20 as all 20 teams noted in the February 4 poll remained in the rankings.

In the Division III poll, Pomona-Pitzer remains a unanimous No. 1 selection as the rankings experienced only two changes.  University of Redlands edged out California Lutheran University for No. 2 this week, while University of California-Santa Cruz moved ahead of Chapman College at No. 7.

University of Michigan remains a unanimous No. selection 1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings as the league poll's only change occurred at No. 3 with Indiana University moving in front of Princeton University.
