Brown Edges No. 12 Hartwick 8-7 OT in CWPA Northern Division Action
Norton, MA - The Brown women's
water polo team (14-12, 1-1 CWPA North) earned a thrilling 8-7
overtime victory against Hartwick College (18-11, 2-1 CWPA North)
on Friday evening at Balfour Natatorium at Wheaton College.
Sophomore Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira
Costa) tallied the game-winning goal, as junior
Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) came up
with a huge save to end a Hartwick power play as time expired and
the Bears handed the Hawks its first loss to an east coast opponent
this season.
Bruno jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first eight minutes of
play before the Hawks tied it up with a pair of unanswered goals in
the second period. Hartwick went on to outscore Brown against in
the third quarter, 2-1, as the Hawks held onto a one-point
advantage heading into the final quarter. But the Bears answered
back with a goal in the fourth to tie the game and head into
overtime.
Both teams battled in the first three minute overtime, but Laing's
stellar defensive play in net kept the Hawks scoreless. Wohlmuth
then came up with a huge goal for Bruno, as she tallied the
game-winner against Hartwick's Jess Dorman.
Wohlmuth had a season-high three goals, while junior
Lauren Presant (Poway, Calif./Poway) and junior
Sarah Glick (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) chipped
in with two. Also adding a goal was freshman Samantha Ryu
(Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School).
