No. 20 Maryland Stampedes Past Bucknell Bison 15-11 at Eastern Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Rachel Jordan (Sr., Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) scored four goals to lead eight University of Maryland scorers as the No. 20-nationally ranked Terrapins knocked off Bucknell University 15-11 in the final game of the 209 Eastern Championship first round.
Trailing 6-4 after a period of play, Maryland chipped away at the deficit to pull even at 7-7 with 2:22 remaining in the second period courtesy an exclusion goal by Blaise Stanicic (Sr., Annapolis, Md./The Key School). The tie lasted until the 44-seconds mark as Jordan tallied her fourth goal and first exclusion score of the day to give the Terrapins an 8-7 lead.
The lead marked the first advantage held by Maryland since Jordan tallied an even-strength marker at 6:48 of the first period to put the Terrapins in front 1-0.
Allison Beck (So., Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) added to the margin with an exclusion goal at the 7:27 mark of the third period, but the Bison stormed back to tied the game at 9-9 thanks to even-strength markers by Amanda Skonezney (Fr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Valentina Rozas (Jr., Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) at 6:11 and 4:54, respectively.
The teams then traded goals to a 10-10 tie before Elizabeth Hopkins (Sr,, Coronado, Calif./Coronado) whipped home an even-strength goal at the 1:54 mark and Beck buried a penalty shot at the 38 seconds mark to give Maryland a 12-10 lead through three periods of play.
Bucknell was unable to challenge the lead the rest of the way as the Terrapins slowly worked the ball and tacked on three insurance goals to Maryland's one for the 15-11 final.
In cage, Ashleigh Jobson (Sr., Annapolis, Md./Severn School) made five saves to earn the win, while Rachel McGillis (Sr., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) blocked down six shots for Bucknell.
