No. 20 Maryland Rallies Past George Washington 10-6 in Southern Division Action

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 20-nationally ranked University of Maryland women's water polo team got hat tricks from Elizabeth Hopkins (Sr., Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and Elina Goldenberg (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) to defeat George Washington University, 10-6, at home in Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium on April 1.

The Terps (11-11, 4-0) rallied from a first quarter deficit by scoring six consecutive goals to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The Colonials converted on two early 6-on-5 opportunities to take a 3-1 lead. Maryland responded with an eight-minute onslaught led by two goals each from Goldenberg and Shannon Simerly (Jr., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) to take a 7-3 advantage. Rachel Jordan (Sr., Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) and Meghan Powers (So., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) each added a goal to round out the scoring for Maryland.

George Washington finished out the third quarter on a 2-1 run, but Ashleigh Jobson (Sr., Annapolis, Md./The Severn School) stymied their comeback attempts in the final frame by blocking four shots and allowing only one goal.

For George Washington, freshman Allison Peotter (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) led the attack with three goals and added three steals. Peotter's 72 points so far this season match the fifth-highest single-season mark at GW, while her 65 steals are the third most. She already set a new school record for swim-offs won and had 63 entering Wednesday's contest.

Sophomore Charlotte Schou (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day) made 13 saves, including a penalty block, to bring her season total to 243, the third-best single-season mark in program annals. Juniors Marissa Stamler (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades), Emily Chereson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Tara Sullivan (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) added a goal apiece.
