Hartwick Captures Ninth Straight Northern Division Title
NEW LONDON, Conn.
- With another two victories, including an 11-7 triumph over #19
Brown in the final match, Hartwick water polo claimed the CWPA
Northern Division crown for the ninth straight season. The Hawks,
after going 2-0 yesterday against Harvard and Utica, sunk host
Connecticut College 11-4, and then avenged an earlier season
overtime defeat against the Bears in the last match for the
title.
In the final game, Hartwick led Brown 3-2 after one period of play
and 4-3 at the break. In the second half, 'Wick got some breathing
room outscoring the Bears 4-3 in the third quarter to take an 8-6
edge into the final stanza. The fourth period was owned by 'Wick as
the squad scored three goals and held their opponents to just one
to claim the top spot.
Junior standout Kirsten Hudson (Wellington, New
Zealand), sophomore Jessica McKee (Tustin,
Calif.), and freshman Sian Ells-Tewhiu
(Wellington, New Zealand) combined for eight of the Hawks'
11 goals with Hudson and McKee each registering a hat-trick. Hudson
would also contribute five steals in the victory. Freshman Shannon
Leonard (Montreal, QC) played a big role in the match finishing
with a goal, six assists and three steals.
Adrienne Holosko (Windsor, Ontario) and Sarah
Johnson (Orleans, Mass.) each scored four goals in the
Hawks' win over the host Camels earlier in the day. 'Wick cruised
in the match outscoring their hosts in every period. To go along
with the eight goals provided by Holosko and Johnson, freshman
Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec City) added two goals.
Dorman played three quarters in the Hartwick net making 12 saves
and grabbing three steals. Holosko took over in the fourth but did
not need to make a save in the stanza.
Hartwick will next compete at the CWPA Eastern Championships next
weekend in Cambridge, MA along with Brown, the top two teams from
the Southern and Western Divisions, and two at-large teams. The
Hawks will be looking for the Eastern title and their fourth NCAA
Tournament appearance in the last six years. The seeding for the
tournament and the weekend's schedule will be announced Monday
afternoon.
