No. 3 UCLA Doubles-Up No. 17 Boston College 6-3 to Advance to Ninth Place Game at National Collegiate Club Championship
DAVIS, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA received four goals from Adele Young (So., Long Beach, Calif.) as the Bruins doubled-up No. 17-ranked Boston College 6-3 to advance to the ninth place game at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship on the campus of University of California-Davis. The Bruins will meet either No. 15 University of Texas or No. 16 University of Central Florida at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 3.
The Bruins never trailed in the game opening a 1-0 lead with 3:46 left in the first period when Young, who earned Player of the Game honors, placed a lob shot into the cage. Boston College tied the game at 1:44 with a layout lob by Kristina Norrgard (Fr., Greenwich, Conn.) from set to even the score through the first period.
UCLA pulled away in the opening minutes of the second period when Young and Desiree Wilson (So., La Vern, Calif.) drilled a bar-in and a bar-down at 3:46 and 3:00, respectively, to take a 3-1 advantage. The Eagles pulled back to within a goal at 2:46 with another marker by Norrgard, but Young finished off a hat-trick at the 2:19 mark with an outside shot to carry a 4-2 lead into halftime.
Boston College once again moved back to within a goal as Mackenzie Campbell (So., Foster City, Calif.) tickled the twine at the 4:56 mark of the third period, but the Bruins closed out the period with an exclusion goal by Young at 2:46 and an outside score from Kelli Bouman (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) with 1:55 remaining in the period for a 6-3 lead.
Neither team found the back of the cage in the fourth period as the Bruins rolled to the three-goal victory.
In cage, Lia Breuning (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) recorded 10 saves for the Eagles, while Rachel Bone (So., Citrus Heights, Calif.), Samantha Lim (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Amanda Gittleman (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) combined for seven saves.
Boston College will continue the tournament at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 versus either Texas or UCF in the 11th place game, a two place improvement over the Eagles finish at the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Oregon.
