No. 6 Oregon Escapes No. 15 Texas 4-2 in National Collegiate Club Championship First Round
DAVIS, Calif. -- Goalie Jessica Kragt (Jr., Portland, Ore.) made 11 saves to earn Player of the Game accolades as No. 6-ranked University of Oregon outlasted No. 15 University of Texas 4-2 in the opening round of the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship on the campus of University of California-Davis.
The Ducks scored single goals in the first, second, third and fourth periods to build a 2-0 lead by halftime and hang on to advance to the second round on Saturday, May 2 at 11:20 a.m. against the victor of another first round game between No. 19 Dartmouth College and No. 7 University of Utah.
Texas falls into the consolation bracket and will face the loser of the Dartmouth-Utah game this evening (Friday, May 1) at 8:40 p.m.
Oregon jumped out to the lead with 3:38 left in the first period as Caitlin Hermann (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) dumped in a shot for a 1-0 margin. The lead expanded to 2-0 with 2:58 left in the second period as Hilary Wilcox (Fr., Portland, Ore.) rattled the cage with a shot and score.
Wilcox struck again at the 2:45 mark of the third period with a five-meter penalty shot before the Longhorns broke up the shutout attempt in the fourth period.
Texas' Abby Edwards (Fr., Houston, Texas) connected on a lob shot at 5:12 and Kate Chambers (Gr., Wellington, New Zealand) tallied off a counter attack at 2:55 of the fourth period to pull the Longhorns to within 3-2, but Katie Peront (So., Beaverton, Ore.) scored an advantage goal at 1:04 and Kragt shutdown the Texas' attack the rest of the way for the 4-2 win.
In cage, Courtney Coffey (Jr., Houston, Texas) made four saves for Texas.
