Week 16 Women's Top 20 Varsity Poll Released; UCLA Completes Perfect Season
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. --
The University of California-Los Angeles completed a perfect season
finishing 33-0 and ranking No. 1 since the preseason as the Week 16
and Final National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Top 20 Poll was
released today.
The Bruins, who earned their fourth straight water polo
championship and the 101st national title in the history of UCLA
athletics, became the first team in the known history of the poll
to go through an entire season ranked No. 1 in the country. UCLA
completed its perfect season by going 3-0 at the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship hosted by
Stanford University on May 9-11 as the Bruins defeated
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (19-6 W) and the University of
California-Davis (10-3 W) before knocking off the University of
Southern California (6-3 W) in the national championship game.
USC, which finishes the season ranked second in the poll, is
followed by Stanford University and the University of Hawaii in
third and fourth place, respectively.
The biggest improvement of the week belongs to UC-Davis which used
a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championship to move up three
places to fifth in the final poll. The University of
California-Berkeley held onto the No. 6 position, while San Diego
State University slipped back to seventh after placing fifth at
NCAA's.
San Jose State University fell back one place to No. 8, while
Arizona State University, University of Michigan, Loyola Marymount
University, University of California-Irvine, California State
University-Northridge, Hartwick College, Long Beach State
University, University of California, San Diego, Princeton
University, Santa Clara University, University of California-Santa
Barbara and Brown University remained at No. 9-20.
