Big Ten Division

Meeting held November 8, 2011 at 4:00 PM

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; Indiana, Katie French; Michigan, Diane Schroth; Michigan State, Allison LaSota; Ohio State University, Rachel Creevy; Purdue University, Julie Oswald

The Commissioner asked everyone if they knew of any teams wishing to join. No one had any reason to believe Northwestern was planning to join.

The league schedule was the next item on the agenda.  Only two teams were interested in hosting that participated on the call. It was felt that Wisconsin or Iowa would be willing to host the third tournament. If not, Purdue and Indiana said they would host a second time.

Indiana asked about covering costs and the Commissioner explained that cost sharing was up to the teams involved. At this point teams agreed to absorb the costs if hosting. The schedule dates were determined as follows: (Indiana was willing to host on the date that Iowa or Wisconsin could not)

  • February 11-12           Indiana, Wisconsin or Iowa
  • March 31-April 1          Indiana, Wisconsin or Iowa
  • April 14-15                  Championship at Purdue

Hosts were reminded to complete the Pool Reservation Form, found under the Forms section on the website. Hotels will be reserved once these forms are submitted.

All coaches were urged to complete an Evaluation Form about the officials following each of the competitions. This form is found under the Forms tab of the website. If you are unsure of which referee you are evaluating, go to the officiating section and click on their picture for easy identification.

The Commissioner mentioned the new Orientation Program for all Team Leaders is required. The program consists of three webinars and can be accessed via the Membership Page. There is also a fundraising webinar that provides some great tips to help teams raise money that is optional.

Media Guide information needs to be submitted before teams leave for winter break and a form can be used online to submit the roster and team summary.

The Commissioner reminded everyone to have their Club Supervisor submit a Participation Contract by December 15 to ensure eligibility. It can be found on the Forms tab.

Teams were encouraged to send in pictures or story leads to enhance the interest of the website. Likewise, Team Leaders should take advantage of the Player of the Week program and nominate athletes each week, regardless of whether the games are within the CWPA league play or non-conference.

The Commissioner requested that each team contact ensure their athletes have read the Code of Conduct before the season starts. Likewise, Deck coaches should adhere to the Dress Code established. Teams were also reminded to update their contact information using the link on the Membership page.

The Commissioner asked everyone if they knew of any teams wishing to join. Nebraska, Monmouth indicated their interest in joining and Augustana was also listed as a possibility.

The league schedule was the next item on the agenda.  Several options were discussed relating to the alignment and teams voted to have the Iowa and Minnesota teams in the north and the Illinois and Missouri teams in the south. Nebraska would enter the north if they join.

The competitive format was discussed with several options presented. Teams voted 8-2 in favor of maintaining the current regional/crossover format. Dates and sites were determined as follows:

Conference Call II

Meeting held December 7, 2011 at 4:00 PM

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; Carleton College, Nora Cassidy and Ben Cerjan; Iowa State University, Maggie Goldsmith; Knox College, Laura Blue; University of Minnesota, Kestutis Micke; Grinnell College, Megan Januska; Lindenwood University, Marko Cubranovic; Saint Louis University, Claire Fleming and Paige Nelson; Washington University, Anastasia Niedzielski and Kristen Faddis; University of; Monmouth College, Chris Falkenrath; University of Minnesota-Duluth, Eric Degonia

The purpose of the call was to discuss the league schedule and alignment. Since the last call Augustana has indicated interest in participating in the league.

The discussion focused on the problem between driving distances to competitive sites and the desire to play different teams throughout the season. Teal Leaders and coaches expressed views on both sides of the issue. The Commissioner also cautioned teams on voting for something that will eventually cause teams to forfeit or commit no contests.

Four basic formats were presented:

1.      Split the division into two divisions-each with their own bid and separate schedule

2.      Play only within your region during the regular season and crossover at the championship

3.      Play one regional and one crossover with the crossover having three games/team

4.      Play one regional and one crossover with the crossover split into two locations

Some teams indicated they would have difficulty making the crossover trip and could be in jeopardy of either not playing in the league or struggling to have enough numbers.

Minnesota Duluth explained it would take them 12 hours to get to Saint Louis for example.

The Commissioner explained that using the fourth option would require a Minnesota team to drive to Washington University unless the schedule was rearranged to find another location.

All but Carleton said they would not be able to make that drive. Carleton stated they should be able to do so, but the Commissioner asked them to consult with their team before making a final decision.

Other comments were made regarding the validity of following that format if the same teams were going to travel each season. In this instance it would be no different than splitting regionally and saving the drive.

After lengthy discussion it was determined that the Commissioner would create a few mock-ups based on the formats and the division would reconvene the following week after discussing the matter with their teams. The key question is how to find a schedule that teams are satisfied with, while at the same time not creating a hardship for programs in travel time and costs.

Conference Call III

Heartland Division Follow-up Meeting, December 14, 2011 5:00 P.M.

Attending: Daniel Sharadin, Commissioner; Grinnell College, Meghan Januska; Iowa State University, Maggie Goldsmith; University of Minnesota, Kestutis Micke; University of Minnesota-Duluth, Eric Degonia; Knox College, Laura Blue; Carleton College, Nora Cassidy and Ben Cerjan; Lindenwood University, Marko Cubranovic; Monmouth College, Chris Falkenrath; Saint Louis University, Claire Fleming and Paige Nelson; Washington University, Kristin Faddis and Anastasia Niedzielski

The topic of the meeting focused on which format the division will use. Two were presented based on the last conference call: regional competition with teams crossing over at the championship or one regional tournament and then a crossover weekend before the championship. Teams ultimately voted unanimously in favor of the crossover/regional format.

Augustana was asked if they will confirm and they indicated it would depend upon whether Monmouth was able to switch their regional date to March 3-4. If they could, they anticipated having enough players to make it work.

Note: since the call Augustana has confirmed their attendance and we are awaiting confirmation whether Monmouth can host on the alternate date.

The league schedule was the first item on the agenda.  Teams debated about changing the format and ultimately voted to not split the division (6-2) and to keep the same competitive schedule. Carnegie Mellon stated they could only be in the championship if it was at their facility. Teams voted 5-2-1 against placing the championship there.

Date conflicts were discussed and teams voted 3-2-1 in favor of placing the crossover on 2/4-5. The schedule was determined as follows:

  • February 4-5              Crossover at Carnegie Mellon
  • March 24-25               Southern regional at Virginia Tech
  • March 31-April 1         Northern regional at Penn (not confirmed-proposed)
  • April 14-15                 Championship Virginia

Carnegie Mellon indicated they were not certain they could travel to Virginia for the championship. No final decision was made regarding whether they would be permitted to play in just the regular season. A mail ballot will need to be issued.

New England Division

Meeting held November 7, 2011, 4:00 PM-a second meeting took place December 7, 2011

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; Boston University, Joan Rajfer and Jamie Drahos; Dartmouth College, Haley Carstensen and Nora Winslow; Williams College, Anna Marrs and Paula Moren; U. S. Coast Guard Academy, Jody Masano

The Commissioner asked everyone if they knew of any teams wishing to join. No one knew of any at this time. He then asked if anyone from the New England Division was willing to switch to the North Atlantic. No one was willing to do so. Based on this information and the fact that Middlebury plans to leave the North Atlantic Division, there are not enough remaining teams to make a viable group. This leaves the options listed below.

  • Option 1          A New England team moves to the North Atlantic Division every year for a one-year stay
  • Option 2          The divisions merge and play a combined schedule (format TBD)

Teams discussed how a merged division would be aligned with north/south or east/west groups as possibilities. Separating according to ability was not logical since ability changes annually.

Teams could only agree on two dates (2/24-25 and 4/14-15) where no one had a conflict. Since the North Atlantic teams were not present and they will receive a vote, a second conference call will be held following the distribution of information to all programs. The date for the call has not yet been determined.

All coaches were urged to complete an Evaluation Form about the officials following each of the competitions. This form is found under the Forms tab of the website. If you are unsure of which referee you are evaluating, go to the officiating section and click on their picture for easy identification.

A new Orientation Program for all Team Leaders is required. The program consists of three webinars and can be accessed via the Membership Page. There is also a fundraising webinar that provides some great tips to help teams raise money that is optional.

The division met jointly with the North Atlantic teams and it was unanimous that the original divisions remain split, with Wesleyan joining the North Atlantic and Middlebury moving to the New England Division.

Dates and locations were determined as follows:

  • February 25-26          Yale
  • April 14-15                 Middlebury
  • April 21-22                 Championship at Boston University

Boston University will use a 25 yard length and the game times will need to be on the 1:20 to allow for warm-up since there is no warm-up pool space available.

New York Division

Meeting held November 2, 2011  5:00 PM

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; Colgate University, Heather Frank; Columbia University, Morgan Marmaro; Cornell University, Diana Foster; New York University, John Barnett; Syracuse University, Julia Esposito

First option

  • February 25-26          Colgate
  • March 31-April 1         Cornell
  • April 14-15                 Championship at Columbia

If Colgate cannot get their pool for February 25-26 the schedule will be as follows:

  • February 25-26          Syracuse
  • March 31-April 1         Colgate
  • April 14-15                 Championship at Columbia

North Atlantic Division

Meeting held November 2, 2011, 4:00 PM a second meeting took place December 7, 2011

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; Bates College, Kristy Zera; Wellesley College, Alexandra Simas

The call began with a discussion regarding the viability of the division in the event Middlebury switches to the New England Division. The Commissioner indicated that if Middlebury desired to do so and no other New England team was willing to switch to the North Atlantic Division, the two divisions would merge and use a combined schedule. The downside to this happening is the loss of an automatic bid to the National Championship. Middlebury stated they would make a final decision following the New England conference call.

The league schedule was the next item on the agenda.  Conflicts were discussed and teams could not locate three weekends that would be free for everyone. Consequently, Bates agreed to play on the first weekend of their spring break and teams voted to have a regular season event during the first weekend of the Bowdoin’s spring break. The dates were selected as follows:

  • March 3-4                  Wellesley (Bates as a back-up)
  • March 10-11              Bowdoin (if they are able to field a team since it is spring break)
  • April 14-15                 Middlebury

Hosts were reminded to complete the Pool Reservation Form, found under the Forms section on the website. Hotels will be reserved once these forms are submitted.

The Commissioner mentioned the new Orientation Program for all Team Leaders is required. The program consists of three webinars and can be accessed via the Membership Page. There is also a fundraising webinar that provides some great tips to help teams raise money that is optional.

The league schedule was the next item on the agenda.  Dates were decided as follows by two separate votes:

  • February 4-5              TBD
  • March 3-4                   TBD
  • April 14-15                 Championship

Central Washington indicated they could host as often as necessary. Seattle and UW indicated they would try to locate a pool in their area for one of the dates. Someone suggested teams split the cost of hosting and the consensus was to play at sites where the pool time was free. The schedule will be finalized when the Seattle site is determined, with Central Washington taking the other two dates.

Hosts were reminded to complete the Pool Reservation Form, found under the Forms section on the website. Hotels will be reserved once these forms are submitted.

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; California State Univ.-Chico, Rachel Westerhoff; California State Univ.-Maritime Academy, Adam Phillipe; Univ. of California-Berkeley, Vanessa Lane; University of California-Santa Cruz, Rachel McCracken

The Commissioner asked everyone if they knew of any teams wishing to join and no one was aware of any teams interested.

The league schedule was the next item on the agenda.  Conflicts were discussed and the dates were determined as follows:

  • February 11-12          Cal Maritime
  • March 9-10                 UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz
  • April 14-15                 Championship UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz

Since UC Davis was not on the call, the third site could not be confirmed.

The competitive format was discussed and someone suggested that the second time a team plays an opponent would be considered an exhibition game. Teams voted 3-1 against this proposal. Therefore, all games will count in the standings. Another suggestion was to try and make the number of games equal per day instead of having to play three one day and one the next. The Commissioner explained it was a function of pool time available, but he would make that happen if there was enough time on Sunday.

Hosts were reminded to complete the Pool Reservation Form, found under the Forms section on the website. Hotels will be reserved once these forms are submitted.

Attending: Dan Sharadin, Commissioner; Rice University, Minn Phant; Texas A&M University, Michele Horner; University of Texas, Jesse Koverman; Texas State University, Jacquline Flynn

The Commissioner asked everyone if they knew of any teams wishing to join. No one knew of any programs interested in joining.

The league schedule was the next item on the agenda.  Conflicts were discussed and the dates were determined as follows:

  • February 11-12           Texas A&M
  • April 14-15                  Texas, Austin
  • April 21-22                  Championship at Rice

Teams were encouraged to send in pictures or story leads to enhance the interest of the website. Likewise, Team Leaders should take advantage of the Player of the Week program and nominate athletes each week, regardless of whether the games are within the CWPA league play or non-conference.

The Commissioner reminded everyone to have their Club Supervisor submit a Participation Contract by December 15 to ensure eligibility. It can be found on the Forms tab.

The Commissioner requested that each team contact ensure their athletes have read the Code of Conduct before the season starts. Likewise, Deck coaches should adhere to the Dress Code established. Teams were also reminded to update their contact information using the link on the Membership page.
