USCGA 7 Yale 14

First seeded Yale Bulldogs defeated fifth seed Coast Guard Academy by the score of 14-7.  The Bulldogs Garrett
Morrison, Dave Williams, Paul Mittermiler, Dave Affleck and Evan Smith each scored two goals in the game.  Although
the score at halftime was 4-9 in favor of Yale, Coast Guard was doing a good job of minimizing their mistakes and
were looking to even the score entering the third quarter. However, in spite of the offensive efforts by Coast Guard’s
Rick Colby, Jack Shadwick, Ian Cambell, and Doug Fallon, Yale picked up their scoring in the second half behind
Jason George and Chris Van Den Berg to secure the victory.

USCGA 8 Tufts 10

The game between the fourth seed Tufts University and the fifth seed Coast Guard Academy proved to be one of the
most exciting in the tournament.  The last time these two teams played, Tufts defeated USCGA by the margin of 14-4.
However, the Coast Guard Bears were on special assignment and were determined to play smarter water polo this
time around. The Jumbos Peter Georgakakos and Steve Ward both started out with the hot hand and scored two
goals apiece in the first quarter, while USCGA’s Jack Shadwick netted the lone goal for his team in the first quarter.
Tuft’s had a strong 6-3 lead to begin the third quarter, but the Academy exploded offensively, scoring four goals of their
own
.  Two goals came from Rick Colby and a goal a piece from Eric Majeska and Jack Shadwick.  “The difference
between this game and the last time we played Coast Guard was that they really matched our intensity and they
played solid defense”, said Tufts captain Dan Hake, after the game. With the teams trading goals and time running
out, the Jumbos looked to senior standout Steve Ward and Marshall Somers to provide the offensive spark, with each
scoring a goal in the final quarter to seal the victory.

William College 7 Wesleyan University 6

Williams College and Wesleyan University have been splitting victories with each other this entire year and in this
primetime match up at the New England Championship, Wesleyan was looking for redemption from their earlier loss
the week before during an invitational tournament.  The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-2 first quarter lead, led by John
Haley who tallied two goals in the first and ended the game with a team high four goals.  Erich Klothen added a goal
in the first for Wesleyan as well.  Brett Marinelle and Alex Wentworth-Ping each added a goal in the first for Williams.
One goal by Wesleyan’s Josh Tanz and another by Williams’s Will Cunningham finished out the scoring in the first
half.  With the Ephmen down a goal to start the second half, they new they needed to pick up there offense and
concentrate on defense. Player coach Will Cunningham had this to say about the game: “The turning point of the
game was the third quarter; we were able to score three goals and hold Wesleyan scoreless.” Cunningham, Henry
Felker
and Alex Wentworth-Ping each added a goal for Williams in the third period.  “Wesleyan was incredibly resilient,
they fought back and played well” said Cunningham.  With the game ending in a 7-6 victory for Williams, Cardinal’s
Coach Mac Colnan had this to say, “The game could have gone either way, we had our opportunities to win but we
couldn’t convert when we needed too.”

a total of three goals for the entire game.  Peter Georgakakos added a goal while Steve Ward notched two goals
and helped to steer the offensive efforts of Tufts.  Williams’ Alex Wentworht-Ping led the way with a total of four

In the fifth place game the Penguins of Amherst College played the Bears of USCGA.  The first regular season
meeting of the two teams was decided by only five goals in favor of the Bears.  In the first quarter Coast Guard
pulled out to a 3-1 margin, led by the scoring of Jack Sauve, Jack Shadwick and Ian Campbell. In the remaining
three quarters, the Bears' offense was too much for Amherst as they continued to widen their lead. Coast Guard’s
Rick Colby led all scorers with five goals.

advantage for either team throughout the game. As both sides traded scoring in the first half, Wesleyan clamped
down on defense in the second, holding Tufts scoreless and securing the victory. The Cardinals scoring came
from Josh Haley Mike Pepi, and Ben Byers, while Ryan Baldwin, Eric Appelin, Steve Ward, and Ben Mitchell

 Yale 6 Williams 5

The first place game between the Ephmen of Williams College and the Bulldogs of Yale University was an important
contest for both teams.  Although both teams would attend the National Tournament, the winner of the game would
earn a higher seed.  Williams earns an automatic bid for being the host and Yale was hoping to earn the fourth seed
with a victory.

Yale’s defense proved to be a key as they held Williams scoreless in the first half.  In addition, Bulldog’s Chris Van
Den Berg scored two of his four in the game during the first half to lead them in scoring, giving Yale a 3-0 halftime edge.
In the third, the Ephmen woke up offensively getting goals from David Lebovitz and Brett Marinelli. Yale countered with
goals from Evan Smith and Jason George to maintain their two-goal lead.  Williams battled back with Cunningham,
Mike Daub and Alex Wentworth-Ping each scoring three goals in the fourth, but the comeback fell short.  The Bulldogs
dangerous defense and offensive patience and ball control proved to be too much for the Ephmen. “Yale is a tough team,
they have a deep bench and they play great defense”, said Williams senior player coach Will Cunningham.  On the
opposite side, Yale had similar praise for their opponents. “We have a lot of respect for Williams. They work hard on
defense and they counter attack well” said Yale’s Captain Garrett Morrison.
