The tournament is not seeded by ability, since there is no equitable means to determine the respective strength of the teams. Too few teams play outside of their division schedules to be able to create an accurate seeding. Match-ups are therefore based upon 2004 Championship results by division. The Host region receives two automatic bids, one of which is assumed by the division champion and the other by the host site or division runner-up (the 8th position). This assures the tournament host is always a participant.

Because the Mid Atlantic and North Atlantic Divisions did not participate in 2004, their positions were determined by random draw. This procedure is clearly outlined in the Championship Handbook.

Wesleyan University Wins Opener against RIT

In a hard fought opener, the Wesleyan University Cardinals edged RIT to defeat the hometown squad in the first game of the
Division III National Collegiate Club Championship, Friday night at the Webster Aquatic Center, Webster, NY. Opening the
scoring for the Cardinals was John Haley, as he found the back of the net on a man-advantage situation just 30 seconds into the
period. From there, the teams traded scoring throughout much of the first half with Wesleyan gaining a slight two-goal advantage
heading into the third quarter, 5-3. In the second half, Tanz continued his scoring, tallying the first goal of the period and opening a
five-goal run by the Cardinals that increased their lead to 10-3. Wesleyan never looked back cruising to a 14-7 victory, in spite of a
three-goal fourth quarter effort by Greg Horrocks from RIT.

Trinity University Edges Macalester College in Defensive Battle

In the second game of the National Championship, the Trinity Tigers came out strong, scoring the first three goals of the contest
in a balanced attack, with three different Tigers getting into the action. Matt Saunders, Grant Quimby, and Andrew Snell each
contributed to the Trinity advantage by the end of the half. Macalester stopped the bleeding by matching Trinity's effort in the second,
scoring one of the their own on the efforts of Elad Rachevsky, while Ken Sugimura scored for Trinity, maintaining the Tigers three-
goal lead. Defense was the key to the third quarter as each team held the other to a goal. Both teams could not find the net in the
fourth, preserving Trinity's margin and giving the Tigers the win. The slow start by Macalester and the numerous posts hit by their
shooters proved to be the difference in the game.

New York University Wins Over SUNY Geneseo

NYU started out strong in the first period with six goals scored by five different people. Tallying for the Bobcats were Friedland,
Miller, Lewis, Garrison, and Pagano. The lone score for SUNY Geneseo was Art Lilienthal. In the second half, NYU continued their
scoring onslaught garnering five more and shutting out the Blue Knights in the process, bringing the total to 11-1. The second half
was almost a replica of the first, with SUNY Geneseo's only scorer Art Lilienthal tallying one, while NYU scored an additional eight
to finish the game 19-2.

Lindenwood Beats Carnegie Mellon

Lindenwood opened up a four-goal lead in the first quarter behind a balanced scoring attack that witnessed three different Lions
earning goals. McCreary and Mermelstein each had a pair and Baumgartner posted one. For the Tartans, Gene Natali had the
only score. The second quarter saw Lindenwood open up a bigger lead behind scoring from McCreary and Phee to extend their
advantage 7-1. However, CMU battled back with three straight goals of their own to close the gap to 7-4, only to see Tonkin stop
the run with a goal for Lindenwood with just :23 remaining in the period. Unfortunately for the Tartans, they were unable to establish
much in the way of offense in the second half beyond three goals by Dan Sunday, as Lindenwood cruised to a 16-7 finish.

Wesleyan Defeats Macalester in a Close Game

Wesleyan jumped to a three goal lead in the first quarter behind the scoring of Dan Devine (2) and Matt Brownstein.
Macalester countered with a goal at the end of the quarter by Elad Rachevsky and then one by Ramiro Nandez in the
beginning of the second to draw within one. The teams then traded goals in the remainder of the half to finish 4-3 in
favor of Wesleyan. As the third quarter opened, Rachevsky found the net again with an eight-meter shot to tie the contest
at 4-4. Devine from the Cardinals then scored to give them a brief lead until Rachevsky scored his fourth to tie it at the
end of the third. During the fourth, Wesleyan's Brownstein scored on a man-advantage to give the Cardinals a pivotal
lead halfway through the period. Macalester was unable to keep pace, despite Rachevsky getting his fifth of the
contest, as Wesleyan converted two more man-advantage situations to secure the victory.

RIT Outlasts Trinity in an Exciting Contest

RIT and Trinity appeared to be well matched, as the two teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, with no school
gaining more than a one-goal lead. Just as it looked as if Trinity would head into the break with a slim margin, Horrocks
from RIT scored with just five seconds remaining to tie the game at 4-4. In the second period, RIT's Richardson opened
with a goal in the first minute of play and and then followed with one in the last minute to give RIT a two-goal lead. However,
the largest margin of the game was short-lived, as Kyle Peterson from Trinity found the net just ten seconds later to bring
them within one at 6-5, ending the first half. In the third quarter RIT established their biggest margin of the game on goals
by Richardson and Mowel to give them an 8-5 margin. However, Trinity was not ready to roll over as Andrew Snell tallied
one to cut the margin to two. In the fourth period the teams traded goals until Trinity scored two, late in the fourth to close
within one goal. Unfortunately just seconds after they scored, Quimby was ejected giving RIT a man-advantage, which they
converted to secure the win 10-8.

NYU Cruises to a Convicing Victory over Carnegie Mellon University

NYU opened their second game of the tournament against a tough minded CMU team. The Bobcats jumped out to an early
five goal lead to end the first quarter at 5-0. During that time NYU used their speed and tough press defense to gain the lead.
One bright spot for CMU was a well placed lob shot by Mary Katica to put the Tartans on the board. NYU continued to overwhelm
Carnegie Mellon with a flurry of man-advantage goals and unrelenting defense. The Tartans struggled to find quality offensive
possessions, even though Gene Natali was able to net a goal on the man- advantage to end the third quarter down seven.
The rest of the game was all NYU, finishing the contest by the score of 12-4

Lindenwood Posts Victory Over SUNY Geneseo

The Lions had all cylinders firing as they matched up against SUNY Geneseo. Patrick McCreary got things going early,
posting four goals in the first quarter. As the first half continued, Lindenwood's Kenny Ellis and Jacob Brown took over
the scoring load, leading the Lions to a 15-1 score at the half. In the second, SUNY Geneseo attempted to come from
behind, earning goals from Art Lilienthal (2) and Nick Watson, but faced too large of a deficit to overcome. The Lions
simply had too much depth and too strong of a defense. They now prepare for a premiere match-up with NYU later tonight,
as both clubs are 2-0 battling for first place in Bracket B, and for a seat in the D-III Club Championship Game on Sunday.

Macalester College Wins Thrilling Victory Over RIT

With a three-way tie-breaker looming between Macalester, Trinity, and RIT, both teams in this game were determined to
come out victorious. Macalester's Elad Rachesvky was an offensive juggernot in the first scoring three goals in the quarter to
close the period 3-1. The Tigers answered with a solid all-around offensive performance and brought the score within a goal
to close the half. RIT began the second half with a renewed sense of focus, and rattled off two straight goals. Macalester
countered with three unanswered goals, one by Ramiro Nandez and two by leading goal scorer Rachevshy. RIT had numerous
opportunities to climb back into this game, however the impressive offensive efforts of Elad Rachevsky and the Fighting Scots
were too much. The game ended with the final score in favor of Macalster 10-9.

Wesleyan Wins in a Stunning Victory Over Trinity

The winner of this game advances to the First Place Game tomorrow with the chance to win the the Division III National
Championship. Knowing the stakes, both teams were battling for every advantage possible. In a relatively low scoring
affair goals were hard to come by, with the score ending in a tie 1-1 to finish the first quarter on goals by Peterson for
Trinity and Brownstein for Wesleyan. In the second period each team scored a pair, keeping the game even going into
the final half. However, in the third period, Wesleyan was to take a two goal margin on the output of Haley and Donne.
These goals proved to be the game winners as Trinity was kept scoreless in the third, only managing one goal in the
fourth, as Peterson tallied his third of the contest. The Cardinals held on despite several close attempts by Trinity in the
final minutes, advancing them to the finals on Sunday against the winner of the Lindenwood and NYU game.

NYU Advances to the Finals With Victory Over Lindenwood

For each team this was their third and most important game of the day. Undefeated Lindenwood University, the Missouri Valley Champion faced off against a game-tested New York University-a team hungry for a Division III National Championship. The first quarter was a defensive chess match as both teams felt each other out. In the second, Miller widened the gap for NYU to give the Bobcats a 2-0 margin. Then Patrick McCreary's fast break goal broke the Lions scoring drought with two minutes remaining in the 1st half, keeping Lindenwood within striking distance. To start the third quarter, John Barnett cleaned up a shot from a teammate and drove home his second goal of the evening, increasing NYU's lead again to two. In what seemed to be a pivotal point in this game, Lindenwood scored on the man-advantage with a goal by Drew Baumgartner to bring the score within one. However, leading goal scorer Barnett answered with his third goal from two-meters to maintain their edge, securing the victory 6-3. The Bobcat's defensive aggression and offensive patience proved to be the difference in their victory.

Macalester started out with an aggressive offensive game and racked up a four-goal lead, with scoring from team
leader Elad Rachevsky and another from Elliot Ward. SUNY's Art Lilienthal added a goal from two-meters, while Ryan
Bucha scored one on the man-advantage to give the team their first two goals to end the half. The Fighting Scots utilized
their entire team, receiving offensive contributions from Cris Ramon, Sjon Swanson, and Tyson Morgan. In the end,
Macalester's depth and experience was too much for the Blue Knights to handle as the game ended 12-2.

Lindenwood Defeats RIT for 3rd Place

In the third place game of the National Championship, the Lindenwood Lions took on the Tigers of RIT. After a tentative first
couple minutes of the game, both teams opened up the scoring to end the first quarter 4-2 in favor of the Lions. RIT appeared to be
feeling the effects of a shallow bench and struggled to keep up with the counterattack speed of Lindenwood as the Lions opened up
a sizeable lead, eventually winning 19-8.

Wesleyan WIns National Championship, Beating NYU 11-7

The National Championship game featured two battle-tested squads, as the defending National Champion Cardinals of Wesleyan met the Bobcats of New York University. NYU was looking to win its first Division III National Championship and unseat the reigning champs.

Defense was the hallmark during most of the first quarter until Wesleyan got on the board with a man-advantage goal by John Haley with just 2:13 remaining. Not to be out done by his teammate, Dan Devine scored another goal on the man-advantage two minutes later to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter. They continued to build on that lead as Matt Donne scored the first of his three on the game just thirty seconds into the second. NYU stopped the run with a man-advantage goal by Anthony Winslow, but Wesleyan came right back on a tally by Josh Tanz. NYU finished the period scoring a penalty shot to bring them within two at the half.

The third quarter saw the Cardinals double their lead, as three players scored including two by Donne to place the Bobcats in an almost impossible position, securing a four-goal lead heading into the fourth. That appeared to be all the offense Wesleyan needed, as the Cardinals continued to execute on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Bobcats at bay. Defensively they were not going to let their margin slip away as both teams traded goals in the fourth. Although NYU made it interesting with a great second half performance by NYU's Pagano, as he rallied with two goals of his own, it was not enough to overtake the earlier lead, giving Wesleyan the 11-7 victory and their second consecutive National Title.

Trinity Closes Out Carnegie Mellon, 8-5

In the final game of the championship for 5th Place, Trinity University edged out the Tartans in a close fought contest. The game was a contrast in styles, with the first half centered on defense. The only goal scored was by Spickler from Trinity on a man-advantage situation. However, in the second half it did not take long for the two teams to come out firing as CMU tied it in just 30 seconds on a goal by Schlichting. Both teams traded scoring, ending the period with a 4-3 margin in favor of Trinity. The fourth quarter was all Trinity in the scoring column, as they opened up a five-goal margin before the Tartans were able to tally one of their own. Most of Trinity's offense in the period was earned by Kyle Peterson, who earned four to help give his team a margin of victory that CMU was unable to overcome, in spite of a four-goal performance by Dan Sunday.
