Northern Division

 

4-22 Jelena Maljkovic, St. Francis College
Jelena Maljkovic the St. Francis College senior captain, 2003 All American Honorable Mention and All conference selection did everything she could this past weekend at the CWPA Northern Championships. Despite the Terriers losing three tough contests, the standout senior playing in her last collegiate tournament saved her best performance for last.

 

Jelena in four games scored a total of 14 goals, half her teams total for the weekend. She also added 5 assists and 16 steals. In addition to these numbers she also drew 10 ejections with four coming in the final game victory over Queens College (8-7). Perhaps her most remarkable feat is that she played every minute of each of the four grueling tournament games.

 

4-8 Kate Chambers, Hartwick College
Junior Driver Kate Chambers led the Hartwick College women’s water polo team to a first place finish at the ECAC Championship last weekend at Brown University. She was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament and was honored as an ECAC First Team All-Tournament selection.

Chambers registered four goals, one assist, three steals and three drawn kick-outs in a 10-5 victory over Wagner College in Saturday’s opener, and followed with two goals, two assists, two steals and two drawn kick-outs in an 11-4 triumph over George Washington University. In Sunday’s championship game, Chambers tallied one goal, three steals and two drawn kick-outs in a 7-6 overtime victory over Brown University.

4-1 Kaitlin Kelley, Iona College
Senior two-meter set Kaitlin Kelley led the Iona Gaels to a 3-1 record this week. She tallied 12 goals, two assists, four steals and 11 kickouts drawn in four games.

Kelley was perfect four goals for four shots in Iona's shutout win against St. Francis on Saturday. She also drew two kickouts and dished out one assist. She scored another goal and drew two kickouts in the Gaels loss to Hartwick Saturday evening. On Sunday, Kelley scored three goals and drew two kickouts to lift the Gaels past Queens 8-7. Kelley helped the Gaels avenge an earlier season loss to Wagner by scoring four goals, tallying one assist and drawing four kickouts in their 10-8 win.

3-25 Jennifer Shoemaker, Iona College
Goalie Jennifer Shoemaker led the Iona College Gaels to a 3-0 record this weekend. The senior co-captain gave up only eight goals in 2.5 games for a 3.2 goals against average.

Shoemaker made seven saves in the Gaels' 10-2 win over NYU, allowing just one goal in two quarters of action. In the Gaels' 11-2 win over Siena College, Shoemaker matched her previous seven saves while also making two steals and assisting on a goal. Shoemaker ended the week with a 8-5 win over Villanova. She had another solid showing, blocking five Wildcat shots and holding them scoreless in the fourth quarter.

3-18 Sheri Johnson, Hartwick College
Senior utility Sheri Johnson led the 15th-ranked Hartwick College women’s water polo team to a 3-3 record last week. She tallied 22 goals, 13 steals and four drawn kick-outs in six games for the Hawks (16-8). In addition, Johnson broke the school record for goals in a game with eight against University of California at Davis on Saturday.

Johnson had four goals, three steals and two drawn kick-outs in a 15-4 triumph over California State Hayward on Thursday. She contributed four goals and one steal in a 15-2 victory over University of California at Santa Cruz, and registered one goal and one steal in a 7-6 loss to San Jose State on Friday.

Johnson opened Saturday’s play with a school-record eight goals in a 13-11 loss against University of California at Davis. She had three goals and four steals in an 11-9 victory over Santa Clara, and finished with two goals and two steals in a 10-6 loss to University of California at Berkeley.

3-4 Kate Chambers, Hartwick College
Junior driver Kate Chambers led the Hartwtick College women’s water polo team to a 5-0 record last week – including three victories over top 20 teams. In five games, Chambers totaled six goals, seven assists, nine steals and six drawn kick-outs.

 

She opened the week with one goal, two steals and two drawn kick-outs in a 7-5 triumph over No. 16 Brown University on Monday. Chambers tallied one assist and one steal in a 13-3 victory over Slippery Rock in the opener of the Bucknell University Invitational on Saturday. She then registered two goals, one assist and two steals in an 8-7 sudden-death overtime win over No. 9 Indiana University.

On Sunday, Chambers had two goals, one assist and two steals in a 9-3 triumph over Bucknell. She contributed one goal, four assists, four drawn kick-outs and two steals in an 11-9 victory over 19th-ranked Princeton University.

2-19 Sheri Johnson, Hartwick College
Senior utility Sheri Johnson led the 18th-ranked Hartwick College women’s water polo team to a 3-2 record last week. Johnson, the 2003 CWPA Northern Division Player of the Year, had 13 goals and one assist in five games for the Hawks (4-5). She opened the week with four goals in a 13-8 triumph over California State San Bernardino, and registered one goal and one assist in an 8-4 victory over 20th-ranked California Baptist. Johnson scored two goals in a 12-6 loss against No. 1 University of Southern California. She had three goals in a 9-4 loss to No. 7 Loyola Marymount University, and scored three goals in an 11-4 triumph over University of Redlands. Johnson was an AWPCA honorable-mention All-American in 2003.

 

2-12 Vanessa Malik, Hartwick College
Senior utility Vanessa Mailk contributed seven goals, seven drawn kick-outs, three steals and one assist for the Hartwick College women’s water polo team (1-3) at the UC San Diego/Arena Women’s Water Polo Invitational over the weekend.

On Saturday, Malik had three goals and two drawn kick-outs in a 9-7 loss to UC San Diego. She registered one goal, one steal and one drawn kick-out in an 8-7 victory in double-overtime against Arizona State.

Malik had one goal and three drawn kick-outs in an 8-5 loss to UC Davis on Sunday. She had two goals, one assist, one steal and one drawn kick-out in an 11-7 loss to UC Irvine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Northeastern Division

 

4-22 Diana Livermore, Brown University
Diana scored three goals and drew four ejections in the Northeastern Championship Game versus Harvard. She also had three steals in the game. In the two other games that she played over the weekend, Livermore tallied five goals and drew a four-meter penalty as Brown won the Northeastern championship.
4-8 Keira Heggie, Brown University
Keira led the Brown Bears to a second Place Finish at the ECAC Championship, losing only the final to Hartwick in overtime by a score of 7-6. Against Princeton in the semi-finals, Keira made 14 saves and had 5 steals. In the championship match, Keira recorded 9 saves and 2 steals. Keira was also named to the All-Tournament First Team.
4-1 Margaret Minnick, Connecticut College
Senior goalkeeper Margaret Minnick led the Connecticut College Camels to a perfect home record this weekend as they defeated Siena, Utica and Marist Colleges. Minnick recorded 18 saves and allowed only 6 goals in the two point Siena victory. Against Utica she pulled in 13 saves, allowing only 4 to cross the line, and had two assists as CC rolled 11-4. In the final game of the weekend, against a Marist team that had defeated CC in their last game of 2003, Margaret was the difference-tallying 11 saves and two steals in a come from behind 5-4 thriller. Minnick recorded two of her saves in the final minute of play, the last one sealing the win and the perfect weekend for Connecticut.

3-25 Teresa Codini, Harvard University
In the three games played at Hartwick on March 20th, Teresa led Harvard with 9 goals scored and 7 steals. For the season, Teresa now leads Harvard's team in both goals (40) and steals (40), and is second in ejections-drawn (23).


3-18 Tina Codini, Harvard University
During the four games played at Harvard against Brown and Connecticut College on March 13th and 14th, Tina was Harvard's leading scorer with 6 goals and was second on the team in assists (5) and second in steals (6). In Harvard's 5-4 victory over Brown, Tina scored 2 goals including the game winner in the 3rd quarter.


3-4 Jeanie Ward-Waller, Brown University
Jeanie Ward-Waller led the Bears defensively to a 3-0 record this past weekend at the Brown Invitational, shutting down opponents at two-meters and racking up 10 steals. She also scored two goals and drew four exclusion fouls over the course weekend. In the 7-5 loss against Hartwick on 2/23, she tallied one goal and one drawn exclusion.

2-19 Diana Livermore, Brown University
Diana Livermore led Brown in scoring this past weekend with eight goals in three games at the Princeton Invitational. Livermore also recorded eight steals and drew five ejections. The Bears went 3-1 on the weekend, with victories over Marist, George Washington and Wagner.

2-12 Keira Heggie, Brown University
Keira Heggie was named MVP of the Ivy Championships last weekend and led Brown to a first place finish with an 8-1 win over Harvard in the final game. She finished with 33 saves, 13 steals and a 4-meter penalty block in the Championship Game. Brown also defeated Penn 18-4 and Dartmouth 17-1 en route to the title game.

1-29 Jillian Jefferds, Marist College

Freshman Jillian Jefferds had an outstanding debut at the University of Michigan Invitational this past weekend. Jefferds scored her first two collegiate goals in against Michigan State on Saturday and added two more later in the day against No. 17 Arizona State. Against Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Jefferds recorded three goals and closed out the tournament by scoring a goal against No. 10 Michigan.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Southern Division

 

4-16 Jess Wells, Villanova University
Goaltender Jess Wells turned in a great performance for the Wildcats in a 10-3 victory over St. Francis on Tuesday, April 6. Wells made 11 saves and posted a 78.6 save percentage. She also added to assists and jumpstarted the Villanova counter attack, all game long.
3-11 Kim Pare, Villanova University
Sophomore Kim Pare scored 20 goals and assisted on 4 more in five games for Villanova last week. Pare chipped in five steals and 10 drawn ejections on the defensive end. Pare's scoring accounted 47% of the Wildcats' goals over the course of the week.

 

2-19 Meg Blitzer, Bucknell University
Junior Meg Blitzer had three goals and one assist in Bucknell's win over 9-7 victory over Wagner College. Over the course of three games at the Princeton Invitational this weekend she scored eight goals as the Bison went 2-1 to open the 2004 season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Western Division

 

4-22 Shana Welch, University of Michigan
Freshman Shana Welch led Michigan to its third straight CWPA Division Championship title. Welch started the weekend with a hat trick on three-for-three shooting against Salem International in the second round. In the semifinal against Washington & Jefferson, Welch notched her 10th hat trick of the season on three-for-three shooting and added two steals. She also broke a U-M record with her 49th goal of the season. Then in the title game against No. 10 Indiana, Welch paced the Wolverines with a pair of goals, scoring her 50th and 51st goals of the season. Over Michigan's three games at the tournament, Welch scored eight goals and added two steals.

 

4-16 Krista Peterson, Indiana University
Junior Krista Peterson led the Hoosiers in an impressive showing against the United States National Team. Team USA downed IU, 15-5 in the fifth game of their 2004 College Tour as they prep for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Peterson netted a hat trick to lead the Hoosier charge as she was 3-of-4 shooting. Peterson helped the Hoosiers take a 2-1 advantage over the defending World Champions in the opening period of play. The five goals scored by the Hoosiers were the second most given up by Team USA on the tour. The Portland Ore., native also had a steal and a kickout earned in the match against the 2000 Olympic silver medallists.

4-8 Shana Welch, University of Michigan
Michigan freshman Shana Welch continued to lead the Wolverines offensively at the Fluid Four Challenge on April 3. Welch posted two of her most complete games of the season, starting the tournament with a pair of goals, an assist and a steal against No. 7 Loyola Marymount. Then against No. 20 Cal State-Northridge, Welch notched her ninth hat trick of the season with four goals and also added an assist, two steals and a drawn ejection. Over U-M's two games, Welch totaled six goals, two assists, three steals and a drawn ejection. Through 33 games this season, she leads the Wolverines with 43 goals and 40 steals, becoming the first Michigan player to record a 40 goals-40 steals season.

 

4-1 Kara Woolley, Indiana University

Freshman Kara Woolley turned in an outstanding effort in five CWPA Western Division matches over the weekend. Woolley helped the Hoosiers to a 5-0 mark, while scoring 12 goals, dishing out eight assists and making eight steals. She shot 85.7-percent on 12-of-14. Woolley now ranks fourth on the team in goals with 18.

 

Woolley helped the Hoosiers to a school record 21 goals in a victory over Salem International. The Fresno, Calif., native netted her second career four-goal game against the Tigers. She also had a career-high tying three steals against SIU. Woolley recorded two more hat tricks on the weekend in wins over Penn State-Behrend and Washington & Jefferson.

 

Also against Penn State-Behrend, Woolley equaled a school record with five assists. She now holds the mark with two other girls and is the first since 2002 to accomplish the feat. Woolley also had a pair of steals in the victory over the Behrend Lions and helped the Hoosiers establish another school record for team steals in a game with 26.

 

3-25 Kandace Waldthaler, Indiana University

Junior Kandace Waldthaler turned in a stellar performance for the No. 12 Hoosiers at the Aloha Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Fairfield, Calif., native scored 13 goals in six games as the Hoosiers went 3-2-1 and finished third in bracket 'A' of the Classic.

Waldthaler netted three hat tricks on the weekend and scored a least two goals in five of the six matches. In the Hoosiers two collegiate match-ups against No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Hawaii, Waldthaler continued her scoring barrage. She scored five goals on only five shots in the two matches and converted both four-meter penalty shots she attempted.

For the year, Waldthaler ranks second on the Hoosiers with 20 goals. Over her last eight collegiate matches, she has scored 16 goals, including four hat tricks.

3-18 Tara Braden, Penn State Behrend College

Tara Braden, a former defender playing her first year in the goal, has accumulated 58 saves in six games, with an average of 8.29 saves per game. After the returning goalie chose to pursue other opportunities, Tara was asked to pick up the goalie position the day before the first game at Salem International. As the team captain she opted for what would be best for the team and decided to learn the position.

 

In an overtime loss to Salem International, Tara tallied 7 saves and 2 steals from the deep-end cage. During a loss to Mercyhurst College she tallied 17 saves, including one blocked penalty shot and 2 steals.

3-11 Betsey Armstrong, University of Michigan

Despite playing only 35 minutes over U-M's three games, junior goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong put up very impressive numbers at the CWPA Western Division weekend on March 6, leading the Wolverines to a 3-0 conference record. Armstrong started the day with four saves and one goal allowed against Slippery Rock. She then put up a Michigan-record 24 saves in a 4-1 victory against No. 10 Indiana. Over the weekend, Armstrong had 28 saves in 35 minutes, two goals allowed, a 1.60 goals against average and posted a .933 save percentage.

3-4 Betsey Armstrong, University of Michigan

Junior goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong turned in five outstanding performances this past week, all against Top 10 competition. Armstrong started the week with 12 saves and one steal against No. 4 Long Beach State. In the opening round of the UC Santa Barbara Invite, she had 10 saves, one assist and allowed only two goals in a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Loyola Marymount. With the win, Michigan advance to play No. 1 Southern Cal where Armstrong had 14 saves, one assist and one steal. In the second day of the tournament Armstrong posted 14 saves against No. 5 San Diego State and had 17 saves and one assist against No. 10 Hawaii. Over Michigan's five games during the week, Armstrong totaled 67 saves, three assists and two steals while boasting a .698 save percentage.

 

2-19 Sheetal Narsai, University of Michigan

Junior Sheetal Narsai turned in four outstanding all-around games to lead the Wolverines to a 4-0 mark at the Princeton Invitational. Narsai started the weekend with two goals on two shots, one assist and one steal against George Washington. Against No. 17 Brown, Narsai had one goal, two assists, a pair of steals and one drawn ejection. She also became the first Wolverine to top 100 steals in her career against the Bears. On Sunday, Narsai opened the day with a goal, one assist, one steal and one drawn ejection against No. 19 Princeton. She wrapped up the tournament with a two-goal performance against Wagner. In that game she also added one assist and two steals. Throughout the tournament, Narsai totaled six goals, five assists, six steals and two drawn ejections.

 

2-12 Casey Kerney, University of Michigan

Junior Casey Kerney led the Wolverines against the top competition in the country against UC Santa Cruz and in the Stanford Invitational. Kerney started the weekend with a pair of goals and drew a four-meter penalty against UC Santa Cruz. Against No. 3 Stanford, she had a pair of drawn ejections, but came back to have a very strong performance in a 7-4 victory against No. 12 San Jose State. Kerney scored her 10th career hat trick and also had three steals in the game. The next day, she turned in her best game of the tournament against No. 9 Hawaii. In that game, Kerney had another hat trick, two assists, three steals and two drawn ejections.Over the weekend, Kerney scored eight goals, had three assists, seven steals, and five drawn ejections, including a four-meter penalty.

 

1-29 Betsey Armstrong, University of Michigan

Junior goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong led the Wolverines to a perfect 4-0 record at the Michigan Invite, including victories over No. 9 Indiana, 4-2, No. 14 UC San Diego (6-2) and No. 17 Arizona State, 8-5. Armstrong posted 10 or more saves in every contest she played, including 15 saves in the game against the Hoosiers. Over the weekend, she totaled 38 saves, held opponents to 2.67 goals per game and boasted an 82.6 save percentage. Armstrong also tallied one assist and four steals from her goalkeeping position.
