Northern Division

 

4-17 Sheri Johnson, Hartwick College
Sheri Johnson a junior all-around/goalkeeper, led the 16th-ranked Hawks to their third straight Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division Championship on Sunday at Brown University. Johnson totaled 3 goals and two assists as a field player, and registered 17 saves in two games in goal for Hartwick (21-9).

Johnson paced the Hawks with three goals and one assist in a 4-3 victory in overtime versus Brown in the championship game. On Saturday, Johnson led the Hawks to victories over Utica (12-4), St. Francis (13-1) and Iona (7-5). Johnson registered six saves and allowed one goal against St. Francis. Against Iona, she totaled 11 saves and tallied one assist for the Hawks.

 

4-10 Sheri Johnson, Hartwick College
Junior Sheri Johnson led the 16th-ranked Hartwick College women's water polo team (17-9) to a 3-1 week and a second-place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Water Polo Championship hosted by Princeton University over the weekend. She contributed 11 goals, two assists and 12 steals in four games for Hartwick.

In Saturday's opener, Johnson scored a game-high four goals to lead the Hawks to an 8-5 victory over Harvard University. She also tallied one assist, one steal and one kick-out drawn in the contest. Against Bucknell University, Johnson led Hartwick to an 11-3 triumph with three goals, one assist and three steals. On Sunday, Johnson led all players with three goals and seven steals in a 6-5 overtime victory versus Brown University. In the championship game against Princeton, Johnson chipped in one goal, one steal and one kick-out drawn in a 10-8 loss to the Tigers.

 

4-3 Shannon McGady, Iona College
Junior Shannon McGady helped preserve the Iona women's water polo winning streak with another outstanding weekend in New York regional play. The Gaels have now won twelve straight to move to 12-1 overall. McGady led the way scoring twelve goals in the four victories while adding four assists. Shannon drew thirteen kickouts over the weekend and grabbed nine steals. In Sunday's contest versus St. Francis, she set an Iona record drawing eight ejections in the game.

 

3-27 Jenny Shoemaker, Iona College
Iona defeated Villanova Thursday night and went 4-0 over Saturday and Sunday to wrap up the Big Apple Classic Tournament at Wagner College. Leading the 5-0 week for Iona was goaltender Jenny Shoemaker who held the opposition to 4.2 goals per game. Jenny recorded a 72.4 save % and swiped 15 steals to help Iona improve to 8-1 overall.

 

3-13 Courtney Crase, Wagner College
Freshman Courtney Crase led Wagner College in scoring with 12 goals in Northern Division, New York Regional competition this weekend. Crase paced the Seahawks, currently ranked 10th in the CWPA poll, with five goals, one assist and one ejection drawn in a 16-13 loss to 3rd-ranked Hartwick College. She followed up that effort a total of five goals and four more drawn ejections in a pair of losses to 6th-ranked Iona College. In Wagner's 11-1 victory over Utica College she added two more goals. For the weekend, Crase tallied 12 goals, three assists, three steals and five drawn ejections. Crase hails from Saratoga, Calif.

 

2-27 Ashleigh Jacobs, Hartwick College
Junior center Ashleigh Jacobs paced the 15th-ranked Hartwick College women's water polo team (6-6) to a 2-1 record at the University of California at Davis Shootout Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Hickey Pool. Jacobs finished the two-day tournament with five goals, two assists, four kick-outs drawn and one steal. She tallied two goals, two kick-outs drawn and one steal in an 11-3 win versus University of California at Santa Clara on Saturday. In the second game, Jacobs contributed one goal and two kick-outs drawn in a
7-5 victory over 14th-ranked University of California at Davis in the nightcap. Jacobs had her best game of the tournament with two goals and two assists in a 9-8 loss to 10th-ranked University of California at San Diego on Sunday.

 

2-13 Kate Chambers, Hartwick College
Sophomore driver Kate Chambers led the 17th-ranked Hartwick College women's water polo team (4-5) to a fourth-place finish at the University of California at San Diego/Arena Invitational at UCSD's Canyonview Pool on Saturday and Sunday. Chambers, who was named to the Arena All-Tournament Team, finished with nine goals, five steals, four kick-outs drawn and one assist. She had three goals, three steals and two kick-outs drawn in a 7-4 victory over 13th-ranked UC-Irvine on Saturday, and followed with three goals and two kick-outs drawn in a 17-8 loss to seventh-ranked San Diego State. On Sunday, Chambers paced the Hawks with three goals, two steals, one assist and one kick-out drawn in an 8-7 victory in overtime against 12th-ranked UC-Santa Barbara.


In nine games this season, Chambers has 18 goals, 15 steals, 14 kick-outs drawn and five assists for Hartwick.

 

2-6 Amy Brunton, Hartwick College
Amy Brunton, a freshman goalkeeper, earned two victories for the 17th-ranked Hawks (2-4) at the Arizona State Invitational on Saturday. She had 10 saves and a game-high seven steals in a 9-6 victory over No. 19 University of the Pacific. Brunton followed with 15 saves, four steals and one assist in an 8-2 win against Arizona State in the nightcap .

Brunton has a 2-3 record and all three of her losses were to higher ranked teams in the national poll. She has registered 45 saves, 13 steals and one assist for the Hawks.

1-30 Vanessa Malik, Hartwick College

Junior all-around Vanessa Malik competed for the 16th ranked Hartwick College women's water polo team at the University of Michigan Invitational last weekend. Malik played well for the Hawks in three close losses to higher ranked teams. She had two goals, one assist, four kick-outs drawn and one 4-meter drawn in a 10-8 loss to 14th ranked Indiana University on Saturday. In the nightcap against No. 7 San Jose State University, Malik chipped in with two kick-outs drawn. On Sunday, Malik had one goal, two kick-outs drawn and one 4-meter drawn against 11th ranked University of Michigan.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Southern Division

 

4-17 Betsey Armstrong, University of Michigan
Michigan's sophomore goalkeeper led a Wolverine defense that allowed only nine goals in four games at the Southern Division Tournament. Armstrong recorded a season-best 17 saves in the championships game against Indiana while allowing only two goals. She was equally impressive in the semifinal match-up against George Washington with 13 saves, including three while the Colonials were on the power play. Armstrong also tallied an assist against both Indiana and George Washington. Armstrong started the weekend with four saves in one quarter against Salem International and seven saves in the first half against Slippery Rock. Over the four game stretch, Armstrong made 41 saves, handed out a pair of assists and allowed a mere 1.45 goals per game.

 

4-10 Jenny Edwards, Princeton University
Senior Jenny Edwards was named Most Valuable Player of the ECAC Championship for her strong performance in leading the Tigers to the title. In the first game of the ECAC Tournament, Edwards had three steals and scored a fourth-quarter goal to seal a 7-2 win over Iona. She then had a game-high three goals and six steals as Princeton edged past Brown, 8-7. The Tigers trailed 7-3 in the third quarter but Edwards' two second-half goals led the comeback. Princeton advanced to Sunday's ECAC games as the top seed in its bracket, and defeated Harvard 10-7 to reach the championship game. Edwards was 2 for 2 with three steals. In the title game, Edwards shot 2 for 2 again with a game-high four steals. She totaled eight goals and 16 steals in the four tournament games, leading Princeton on both the offensive and defensive ends to the ECAC Championship. The crown marks Edwards' third in her four years at Princeton.

 

4-3 Erin Brown, University of Michigan
Erin Brown led the Wolverines to their third consecutive Southern Division title and a perfect 8-0 conference record with 10 goals in limited playing time at the Southern Division Tournament on March 29-30. Brown never played more than two quarters in any game. Against Slippery Rock, Brown recorded her second hat trick of the season with three goals. She also notched two assists and a pair of steals. Against Gannon, Brown scored once with one assist and two drawn ejections and then scored two more times against Mercyhurst. Brown finished the weekend with a career-high four-goal performance against Washington & Jefferson. She also added one assist, one steal and one drawn ejection. On the Wolverines four games, Brown totaled 10 goals, four assists, three steals and three drawn ejections.

 

3-27 Chesed Ceniseroz, Villanova University
Villanova went 3-1 this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. For the weekend, Chesed Ceniseroz scored four goals and had four assists, but it was her play on defense that helped Villanova achieve the success it did. Ceniseroz recorded 16 steals on the weekend, to bring her season total to 34. Against Michigan State she recorded five steals and notched eight more in Villanova's 9-6 win over Gannon.

 

3-13 Kira Canon, George Washington University
Junior Kira Canon led the Colonials, currently ranked 9th in the CWPA poll, to a 2-2 CWPA opening weekend with victories over Villanova and Salem International and losses to 3rd-ranked Princeton and 7th-ranked Bucknell. In GW's first game of the weekend, a 10-3 defeat of Villanova, Canon led the Colonials in scoring with four goals. George Washington fell to Princeton in the next game, however she provided more than half the team's scoring with five goals. She added four more goals in a 14-5 victory over Salem International. In the team's final game of the weekend, a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to Bucknell, Canon led the team in scoring for the fourth consecutive game with three goals. Canon's totals for the weekend: 16 goals and four assists.

 

3-6 Betsey Armstrong, University of Michigan
Michigan's sophomore goalkeeper finished the Wolverine's spring break trip across California very strongly. Armstrong posted at least 10 saves in three of Michigan's four games the past week. The only game she failed to reach the 10-save mark was against the University of La Verne in which she only played the first half, due to U-M's 5-0 halftime lead. Armstrong started the week with a 12-saves performance against No. 4 Long Beach State, including two power play saves. She also had one steal and one assist. Armstrong also had 12 saves against No. 10 UC Santa Barbara to go along with an assist. In only one half of action against La Verne, she stopped all seven shots she faced. Finally, Armstrong recorded 12 saves and one assist against Redlands, allowing only three goals. Four of her saves came while the Bulldogs were on the power play. Armstrong's final line for the week read 43 saves, including 12 on the power play, three assists and a .672 saves percentage.

 

2-20 Jessica Goldner, Indiana University

In what was her most successful weekend in her young Hoosier career, Jessica Goldner recorded an impressive .729 save percentage on 35-of-48 shots-on-goal this past weekend at the Princeton Invitational. Against Bucknell, the Los Altos Hills, Calif., native stopped 6-of-9 shots, while following with a 10-of-13 performance against No. 18 Brown. Goldner was pulled late in the fourth quarter against No. 19 Harvard, but not before recording a perfect 13-of-13 save total. The Hoosier sophomore ended the tournament with a 6-of-13 save performance in the Hoosiers' thrilling victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara. Also on the weekend, Goldner surpassed the 200-career save mark, and ended the Princeton Invitational with her current career total of 234.

 

2-13 Kristin Stanford, Indiana University

Indiana University All-American senior Kristin Sanford was a marked target for the top-ranked competition the Hoosiers faced this past weekend at the Stanford Invitational. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native managed to score 11 goals on 23 attempts however, and contributed on 14 of Indiana's 29 goals over the four-game span (11 goals, 3 assists). Sanford also managed to snag seven steals, but it was her offensive performance in the water against No.1 Stanford, No. 5 Cal and No. 9 San Jose State that demanded the respect of double and sometimes triple-teams. Sanford scored two of the Hoosiers' three goals against Cal, netted four against San Jose State, including two assists, and one against the defending NCAA champions. Indiana's all-time scoring leader ended the weekend posting a perfect 4-for-4 shooting mark with one assist, in limited action against UC-Santa Cruz.

 

1-30 Kristin Stanford, Indiana University

Indiana University All-American senior Kristin Stanford capped off a high-scoring Michigan Invitational by tying the school record with six goals Sunday, as the Hoosiers topped No. 7 San Jose State, 10-8. In addition to her six goals, Stanford recorded two steals and one assist. Against Hartwick, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native scored four goals on seven shots, while tallying three steals. It did take until the fourth quarter of the Michigan game, but Stanford found the back of the net against the Wolverines as well, scoring once, with an assist and a steal each. On the weekend, Stanford scored 11 goals on 24 shots (.458), while recording six steals and two assists. The all-time scoring leader at Indiana with 184 goals, Stanford performance's should boost the Hoosiers past 14th in the polls, which is currently the highest ranking in school history for the Hoosiers.
