Men's Varsity Player of the Week -- 2000

 

11-22  Nick Hill, United States Naval Academy

Sophomore Nick Hill (Long Beach, CA) was the main ingredient in holding off the hard charging
St. Francis Terriers during the finals of the Eastern Championships held at Brown University. Hill
led the Mids to their first NCAA bid in six years and was the mainstay of their defense. In the finals
against Saint Francis, he had 16 saves, two steals, and allowed only 12 goals. He also made a
key stop on a breakaway in the third quarter that kept Navy in the game, eventually forcing sudden
death overtime. He was later voted the best goalie in the tournament by the coaches.

 

11-8 Tamas Katona, Saint Francis College

Senior Co-captain Tamas Katona led the Terriers to their first Northern Division Championship
this past weekend at Harvard University.
In the Terriers' opening round game against MIT, Tamas
recorded 14
saves and even scored a goal on a 30-meter shot, en route to the 19-6 win. In their
second game against Brown University, Katona tallied nine saves in a 12-4
victory. He helped
contain the Brown attack by not allowing the Bears to score on
eight man-advantage opportunities.
During
the championship game versus Massachusetts, he anchored the defense with ten saves
and allowed only six goals, earning the Terriers a 9-6 win. Throughout the tournament Katona
triggered the
Terrier counterattack with pinpoint passing and excellent playmaking decisions.
Defensively he finished with a 67% save percentage.

 

11-1  Roland Manyai, Saint Francis College

Co MVP at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship tournament, Senior captain
Roland Manyai had a profound impact on the opposition as he led the Terriers to their first ECAC
title. In the first round game against Massachusetts, Manyai led Saint Francis in scoring, with five
goals (on only seven shots), one assist, and two steals. In the second game of the day versus Navy,
he added three goals, leading the Terriers to a 10-5 win. In the semifinals of the tournament, the
Terriers played cross-town rival Queens College. Once again, Manyai dominated everywhere with
five goals (on only eight shots), one assist, one steal, one ejection drawn, and one block. During
the finals he continued his solid performance by scoring two goals on five shots. He also tallied

two assists, three blocks, and one steal.


10-25  Burak Incecam, Queens College
Burak Incecam led the Knights to a complete sweep this past weekend at Amherst, helping his 
team to four straight wins in league play including victories over Connecticut, Fordham, Harvard,
and Massachusetts. He totaled eight goals, including three in a 12-7 win against Harvard and
two in a 10-9 win against Massachusetts Incecam also drew five ejections, tallied six assists, and earned
eight steals.

10-18 Jeff Colton, MIT
Jeff Colton led MIT to its first Division III Eastern Title since 1997, which was capped off by a 
thrilling 10-9 sudden death overtime victory over Johns Hopkins University in the championship
game. During the contest, Colton totaled three goals, two assists, two steals, and drew four ejections.
His effort over the weekend ended with 11 goals, five ejections drawn, six steals, and three assists
in just three games.

10-11  Jon Pharris, Princeton University
Goalie Jon Pharris led his team to three of four wins over the weekend, including a crucial
6-5 win over Navy that earned the Tigers a first-place berth heading into the Southern Division
Championships. This game was sweet revenge for Pharris. Earlier in the season Navy scored
14 goals, as the Midshipmen beat Princeton 14-13. Pharris finished the weekend in great form
as well, tallying ten saves and letting in only five goals during a 9-5 victory over Bucknell.

10-4  Zamen Mirzadeh, Johns Hopkins University
Zamen Mirzadeh led the Jayhawks to five victories this week, including wins over George 
Washington, Washington & Jefferson, Grove City, Penn State Behrend, and Villanova in overtime. 
His offensive production was amazing, as he scored a total of 31 goals and drew 10 ejections. 
Defensively, he also tallied 15 steals.

9-27   Sean Foster, United States Naval Academy
Sean Foster led the Mids to four wins this week, including a 14-13 thriller against defending 
Southern Division Champion, Princeton University. While guarding his talented younger brother 
Kevin for most of the game, Sean managed to throw in a game high five goals and three assists. 
Foster was also instrumental in the wins over Bucknell, George Washington, and Johns Hopkins 
with a total of nine assists and 13 goals scored.

9-20  Adam Moore, University of Massachusetts
Junior Adam Moore (Sinking Spring, PA), scored six goals in two games as the Minutemen swept 
their Ivy League opponents, Brown University and Harvard University. Scoring an evenhanded three
in each game, Moore is one of the primary two-meter sets for the team and one of the dominant
centers in the East this year. The two game tally brings his season total to 20 goals.

9-13  Mike Masterson, Harvard University
Mike Masterson dominated the play in the CWPA this past week. He not only served as the 
leading scorer in three of four games this weekend for Harvard, totaling seven goals, he also was
a key playmaker, tallying 10 assists. Speed was a major part of his game as well. He won 10 of 
16 sprints, giving his team possession of the ball more often than not. Finally, he earned a perfect 
record defensively by receiving zero ejections, while at the same time drawing four ejections 
against his opponents.

9-6 Sean Foster, United States Naval Academy
In Foster's first tournament since a season ending injury last year, he led the Naval Academy with
eight goals in four games this weekend.  He had three of his eight goals in the final game versus
Queens College.  He had a key steal and played tough defense as the Mids went on to defeat the
10th ranked Minuteman in the semifinals 3-2.
