WEEK 9 NATIONAL WOMEN'S WATER POLO POLLS RELEASED; UCLA, MICHIGAN, POMONA PITZER & NOTRE DAME REMAIN #1

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. (March 26, 2008) --- Leading the pack of the nation's best varsity collegiate programs is the University of California, Los Angeles as the 2006 and 2007 NCAA National Champion Bruins remained a unanimous #1 selection for the 10th week in a row, including the 2008 preseason poll.

The Bruins, who are 21-0 on the year, are in the midst of a 29 game winning streak dating back to April 14, 2007 when UCLA fell to Stanford University 7-6. This year, UCLA is 6-0 against the other teams in the Top Five of the National Poll as the Bruins have knocked off #2 Stanford University (8-7 W SV-OT, 9-7 W), #3 University of Southern California (8-4 W, 8-7 W), #4 University of Hawaii (15-10 W) and #5 University of California-Berkeley (9-4 W).

Positions #1-13 did not change in the poll this week as Stanford University, University of Southern California, University of Hawaii, University of California-Berkeley, San Diego State University, Arizona State University, University of California-Irvine, San Jose State University, University of California-Davis, Loyola Marymount University and the University of Michigan held their spots in the rankings.

The first movement of the week belongs to Hartwick College as the Hawks improved two positions to take over #14 with 33 points, one point ahead of California State University-Northridge which slipped back to #15. Princeton University, which was ranked #20 last week, improved four places to #16, while Indiana University fell back to #17, University of California-Santa Barbara remained at #18 and Santa Clara University and University of California-San Diego tied at #19 to round out the Top 20 varsity teams.

The University of Michigan remained #1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings this week as a unanimous top selection of the poll committee as the Wolverines garnered 100 points and remained undefeated in CWPA play this week. Hartwick College, which held the top spot prior to the Wolverines, improved to second this week as the Hawks edged Indiana University 4-3 to drop the Hoosiers back to third. The remainder of the poll remained unchanged with Bucknell University, Princeton University, University of Maryland, Brown University, Mercyhurst College, Harvard University and George Washington University falling back into line at #4-10.

In the Division III ranks, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remains the #1 team as the poll saw minimal changes from the March 19 balloting.

California State University-East Bay, California Lutheran University, University of California-Santa Cruz, University of Redlands and Occidental College remained #2-6, while Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges moved up one spot to tie with Chapman College for seventh. Whittier College and University of LaVerne round out the poll at ninth and tenth, respectively.

The University of Notre Dame retained its position as the #1 club team as the Fighting Irish garnered 98 points. The University of California-Davis stayed in second place, while California Polytechnic State University, which was ranked #1 in six of the previous national polls preseason, Week 1, Week 4, Week 5, Week 6, Week 7) improved one place to take over third and drop the University of Florida back to fourth place. The University of Oregon surpassed the University of California-San Diego for ninth place to account for the only other change in the Top 10 this week.

In the next 10, the University of California-Berkeley improved two places to take over 16th place, the University of Washington remained at #17, Fresno State University slipped back to #18, the University of Central Florida held onto 19th place and Boston College climbed into the Top 20.
